Created to support my Masters dissertation, ‘Spirit of Scotland’ is an interactive, real-time application. It guides the user through the heritage of scotch whisky and the key challenges the sector faces in safeguarding and navigating that heritage. The virtual environment features 19 conversations with stakeholders on a range of topics including Brexit, sense of place, aura, PGIs, terroir, community, heritage management, Scotland as a brand, and the ‘britishness’ of scotch whisky.
The conversations were edited from recorded interviews conducted with 15 participants which included Distillery Managers, Head Distillers, a Whisky Blender, a spirits retailer, Business Analysts within the sector, and representatives from the Scottish Whisky Association. Participants represented distilleries across Scotland including Ben Nevis, Bruichladdich, Deanston, Glen Grant, Glenrothes, Isle of Arran, Isle of Harris, Laphroaig, Lindors Abbey, and Whyte & MacKay.

The research project was undertaken in the summer of 2018, and was produced with Unity 3D, Audacity, 3ds Max, Adobe Ilustrator and Adobe Photoshop. The video was edited with After Effect and provides an overview of the application.
